Description

The clubfoot treatment also known as “Ponseti Method” is an effective, inexpensive, minimally invasive form of treatment and well suited to low resource settings. It is considered as the gold standard treatment for clubfoot. The treatment involves serial castings over 5-8-weeks, a minor outpatient surgical procedure (Achilles tendon tenotomy) and a foot abduction brace, worn while sleeping for 4-5 years to maintain the correction and reduce risk of relapse.

The Ponseti method is completed in two phases, both of which are essential to achieving correction of the foot:

  • Correction phase: Achieve correction of deformity (Casting & Tenotomy).
  • Maintenance phase: Maintain correction (using Foot Abduction Braces).

The Ponseti Method is cost-efficient and has been shown to be effective in more than 95% of the cases when done correctly.
